Intraocular Lens Implant

Intraocular lenses are small, synthetic lenses surgically implanted into the eye. They come in a few different varieties and are used primarily to treat cataracts, or small, vision-impairing deposits that frequently form in the eye’s lens as an individual ages.

A serious case of cataracts interferes with the normal passage of light through the eye, resulting in blurred vision and increased difficulties with glare. If left untreated, a case can even progress to blindness. One solution is to simply replace the affected lens with intraocular lenses.

Intraocular lenses work by either altering or replacing the eye’s lens. In a healthy, well-functioning eye, the lens focuses light onto the retina, a light-sensitive membrane at the back of the eye that works to send visual signals to the brain. In the case of cataracts, small bodies form in the lens, rendering it a fuzzier, less reliable focusing apparatus. Replacing it with a clear, appropriately shaped synthetic lens at least theoretically solves the problem.

The best alternative treatment for those who suffer from extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness where LASIK might not be an option is Implantable Contact Lens, as it provides the ideal permanent solution to visual impairment that cannot be fixed by traditional LASIK, and also helps avoid the daily hassle of removing and cleaning lenses.

Royal Spanish Center in Abu Dhabi, with a professional team and the most advanced technology, offers the best eye treatment. The procedure of cataract lens implants provides a much higher level of optical quality and lifestyle convenience than thick glasses, especially when you know that the materials used are inert plastics that tend to outlast us by a hundred years. So, we always implant an intraocular lens at the time of eye surgery if it is safe to do so.

We at Royal Spanish Center in Abu Dhabi will examine the health of your eyes, consider your goals and lifestyle needs, and then recommend the ideal lens implant for you.

For patients who suffer from extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness, and even those with double vision and blurry vision, LASIK might not be an option. The best alternative is a process known as Implantable Contact Lens, which are basically lenses that are placed inside the eye with a short and simple procedure. ICL provides the ideal permanent solution to visual impairment that cannot be fixed by traditional LASIK, and also helps avoid the daily hassle of removing and cleaning lenses.

The type of ICL we use at Royal Spanish Center in Abu Dhabi is the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens, which is a type of Phakic Intraocular Lens made from a soft, foldable polymeric material. As the cornea of our eyes is made up of collagen, this material offers exceptional biocompatibility as well as superior optical capability, making it extremely easy to implant into the eye behind the iris through a tiny incision of only 3.0 mm. Additionally, since the Visian™ ICL is stationary and not attached to any part of the eye, patients can hardly feel its presence.

With the recent advances in this type of technology, Visian™ ICL offers several advantages for patients who cannot opt for a traditional LASIK procedure, such as:

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered Clearly and Simply

Our complete examination take around two hours. It is a series of specialized tests by which we determine your prescription, the thickness of the cornea, etc. Based on this examination your doctor will suggest the best method of correction. Since the examination may involve the application of pupil-dilating eye drops, you are advised not to drive a vehicle and have someone accompany you to drive you home.

You want to refrain from driving until your doctor tells you your vision is stable and it is safe to do so.

If you are wearing lenses, the measurements can be misleading. Contact lenses can alter the condition and shape of your cornea. It is advisable to stop using lenses at least 2 weeks before your exam.

There is no such limit. It is agreed that a patient should be in generally good health (e.g. no diabetes, allergies, etc.) After your consultation, your doctor will advise you on possible treatments based on your situation.
