Femto Cataract
Femto Cataract in Abu Dhabi
With cataract being the result of a normal aging process, cataract extraction is the most common surgery done worldwide. Since the 1990s, the standard of care has been phacoemulsification, where an ultrasound probe is used to fragment and break down the cataract before emulsifying it and then suctioning this emulsified lens through a small port. All of this is done through a very small incision. However, now we have a new intervention available: Femto-cataract. This rapidly spreading technology is largely replacing traditional phacoemulsification, with similar results and faster healing time. The initial steps of wound creation, lens capsule opening, and lens fragmentation are done by FemtoLaser technology in Femto-cataract, as opposed to the manual method. The lens fragments are then emulsified and suctioned like a traditional phacoemulsification surgery.Advantages
- Faster procedures as the laser step is quicker than the manual one.
- Less time inside the eye, as lens fragmentation is performed by the laser before the wound is opened.
- Faster healing due to the regularity of the wound.
- Lower complication rates, as the wound and lens capsule are more regular due to the use of the laser, reducing the risk of vitreous loss.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Your Questions, Answered Clearly and Simply
How long does a qualification examination take?
Our complete examination take around two hours. It is a series of specialized tests by which we determine your prescription, the thickness of the cornea, etc. Based on this examination your doctor will suggest the best method of correction. Since the examination may involve the application of pupil-dilating eye drops, you are advised not to drive a vehicle and have someone accompany you to drive you home.
Can I drive after the procedure?
You want to refrain from driving until your doctor tells you your vision is stable and it is safe to do so.
Why should I stop using lenses before my eye exam?
If you are wearing lenses, the measurements can be misleading. Contact lenses can alter the condition and shape of your cornea. It is advisable to stop using lenses at least 2 weeks before your exam.
What is the maximum age limit for laser vision correction procedures?
There is no such limit. It is agreed that a patient should be in generally good health (e.g. no diabetes, allergies, etc.) After your consultation, your doctor will advise you on possible treatments based on your situation.
